At
the opening briefing, players were invited to join one of four teams: the
Rangers,
Stargate Command,
Starfleet Intelligence*
or the Torchwood
Institute.
They were informed by Agents B and D (of The Agency) that a bomb had been
planted at the convention and that the code to defuse it needed to be identified.
A countdown timer was prominently on display, indicating that they had around
40 hours to find the code [zero hour was apparently scheduled for the announcement
of the Ruler of the Universe result on Sunday afternoon.]
(*that well known oxymoron.)
Each
group then received an individual briefing (on Red paper), which told them
that it was believed that somewhere in the hotel was concealed an item of
considerable power, although the Agents were unable to give them any more
information (except that it was presumed that the bomb was designed to destroy
the item.) Along with their briefing, each group received a puzzle (on Orange
paper) and the information that the next briefing would be at noon on Saturday.
Click on the group links or logos to see the Red briefings
and the Orange puzzles (one for each group.)
Each is a PDF document, approximately 200 kb in size.
[Friday progress: We had about twenty players at the opening
session, and they split themselves up fairly evenly into the four groups.
Torchwood completely solved their first puzzle (and the sudoku) on
the Friday. Then they pretty much vanished for the rest of the weekend, leaving
just one agent who eventually linked up with the Rangers. The other three
groups all got halfway through their puzzles but hadn't identified the item
they were looking for. Highlight of the evening for me was the moment when
one of the Rangers group went to their room and came back with a complete
boxset of B5 DVDs to help them solve their puzzle!]
